Temaki Onigiri (Wrapped Rice Balls)

Temaki Onigiri (Wrapped Rice Balls)

What kind of onigiri is temaki (wrapped) onigiri?

The fun crispy texture of seaweed. Casual and fun, a classic triangular onigiri.

Reason for Development

Initially, seaweed with plastic film was wrapped around rice to achieve a crispy texture. However, the process of removing the film was complex, so when we looked for a simpler method, a vendor introduced us to a double bag in which pulling the inner bag would wrap the onigiri in seaweed. The novelty of this structure, the texture of the seaweed, and its convenience made the founder realize, "This is it!" and it was quickly adopted and put into production.

What Makes It Different From Other Onigiri

Its biggest feature is the fun crispy texture of the seaweed. Initially, this product used "parachute-type" packaging where the inner bag was pulled to wrap the rice in the seaweed, but in 1998 it was changed to its current center-cut type. What's more, the rice was originally pressed into a triangular mold that would simultaneously create a hole for the filling, but a sheet wrapping method has been adopted to achieve a softer texture.
